Transportation of four fully assembled oil rig sets from UAE to Oman via land-sea-land
OVERVIEW
The client needed four new fully assembled oil rigs to be transported from the factory in the
Jebel Ali Freezone in the UAE to various oil concession locations in Oman. The rigs were
required to be delivered on an urgent basis and the whole operation was to be carried out
during the pandemic lockdown
SOLUTION
The Khimji Ramdas Shipping division’s Multimodal Logistics team organized and managed
the complete logistics chain from the factory to the final destinations.
– Specialized equipment and crews were deployed
– The first two rigs were transported together on the same barge to expedite
delivery
– Coordination was done with various government authorities to get clearances and
enable road modifications and steel fittings such as street lamp and signage
gantry removals to enable the rigs to pass
– Police escorts were arranged
– The road movement in the UAE covered a 30km road journey that required the
creation of a steel bridge to span a 132kV power line, the removal of 124
lampposts, compacting of bypass roads (150m in three locations) and the
diagonal crossing of the busy Shaikh Zayed Road
– Sea transport was done with a barge and tugboat combo that set sail from Jebel
Ali Port to Duqm in Oman
RESULT
The four rigs were delivered to the client’s satisfaction with all arrangements and clearances
handled by our team who also selected and subcontracted the heavy lift operators for the
road and sea transport
CONCLUSION
The KR Shipping division’s Multimodal Logistics team successfully handled a very complex
logistical operation under lockdown restrictions. We were also able to expedite delivery and
